The Dave Bozied Intern Program is named in the memory of long-time supporter and SDSTA Board Member Dave Bozied

Period of employment: full-time, dates are negotiable up to 10 weeks


Compensation: A $400/week stipend plus up to $100/week travel expenses (for gas and/or dormitory space at BHSU) on an as-needed basis


Eligibility: Graduate students and undergraduates entering their junior or senior year/South Dakota resident or attending a South Dakota university. Must show proof of medical coverage.


Environmental science or engineering (1 position):
This position requires an individual who is highly organized and able to work independently and safely with minimal direction. Candidates must be physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Candidates must have an outgoing personality and be able to lead others in training and by example. They must possess a valid driver's license. Candidates should possess excellent computer skills in MS Word and Excel. A good firm knowledge of AutoCAD would be a plus.
Daily tasks will include but not be limited to conducting and supervising sampling programs in accordance with permit requirements, preparing requisite reports, conducting environmental site inspections, preparing and implementing sediment erosion and control prescriptions, managing waste streams, helping maintain environmental documentation and filing protocols, investigating environmental incidents, increasing environmental awareness with SDSTA staff and contractor groups, facilitating liaison with stakeholders (government, DUSEL, contractors, employees, local residents).


Physical sciences or geological engineering (2 positions):
These positions require graduate or undergraduate students of geology, physics, geological engineering or related disciplines, who are highly organized and able to work independently and safely with minimal direction. Candidates must be physically fit and willing to spend a substantial amount of time underground.
Daily tasks will include but not be limited to radon and other environmental monitoring, geologic mapping, cataloging of historical Homestake mine data, entering information into the Vulcan database, participating in the development of early science laboratory sites.

Science education (1 position):
This position requires an individual studying education with an emphasis on science, or science with a strong interest in education, who is highly organized and able to work independently and safely with minimal direction. The successful candidate must be available to start by June 1st at the latest.
The successful candidate will be tasked with putting together a school visits program for the Sanford Laboratory Education Department, matching activities and tour opportunities with the South Dakota science standards at several grade levels, testing and perhaps constructing activities, and developing classroom materials to distribute to teachers before or during classroom visits. The successful candidate will also help with Education Department activities planned for the summer, both onsite and offsite.
